AI Hype, Ransomware Reality & AI Threats Nobody Wants to Discuss
Download MP3CONTENT ADVISORY: The final portion of this episode includes a discussion of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM), child exploitation, and the legal and ethical questions surrounding this content. Cybercrime may be adopting AI, but has it actually changed the business of being a cybercriminal?
In this episode of Brutally Honest Security, Eric Taylor digs into several stories that challenge some of the assumptions surrounding today's threat landscape, starting with an apparent new breach that turned out to involve data from a ransomware incident years earlier being resold on a dark forum. It is a reminder that leaked data can continue creating problems for an organization long after the original incident is over.
Eric also takes on the growing narrative around AI-powered cybercrime and why following the money may tell us more about attacker behavior than following the latest technology. Threat actors want results, and if phishing, stolen credentials, vulnerable edge devices, initial access brokers, and other proven techniques remain profitable, there is little incentive to completely reinvent the playbook.
The episode also examines reports of malicious implants in internet-facing routers, including Speaking Tone and Dark Lantern, before turning to a Minnesota county facing its second ransomware incident within months. Eric breaks down why containment and remediation after an attack matter just as much as restoring systems, and what can happen when attacker access is not fully removed.
The final segment moves into a difficult but increasingly important issue: AI-generated CSAM and the legal arguments emerging around whether artificially generated material should receive different treatment under the law. Eric considers the arguments being raised while making his own position on the potential harm, grooming implications, and risks of normalizing this material clear.
